Jakarta, 7 November 2017 - Mozilla, a pioneer and advocate for the Open Web, is pleased to introduce Firefox Quantum, the whole new browser which uses Mozilla’s next-generation Web engine, and Firefox Rocket, a fast and lightweight Android browser tailor-made for Indonesia. Get ready to experience these two modernized and customized Firefox browsers and take the quantum leap with us.
Enjoy Better Browsing Performance with Firefox Quantum
Last October, Mozilla announced ‘Project Quantum’ to build its next-generation web engine. After more than a year of development and having fixed nearly 500 bugs that impacted performance, we have made several major improvements to Firefox that have made it better than ever. For example, the “Quantum Compositor” has reduced browser crashes by about 10% and game-changing features like WebAssembly and WebVR, have enabled super fast, near-native performance for web apps on desktop and on VR headsets.
Just a few weeks ago we announced the Beta for Firefox Quantum. Compared with Firefox of just six months ago, Firefox Quantum is 2X faster on the Speedometer 2.0 benchmark. The brand new Firefox also balances memory usage using 30% less memory than Chrome.
In addition to the massive increase in overall performance, we also focused on providing an improved user experience. With ‘Tracking Protection’ in private browsing mode, we achieved a 67.5% reduction in the number of HTTP cookies set during a crawl of the Alexa top 200 news sites. Since Firefox does not download and render content from tracking domains, ‘Tracking Protection’ also enjoys performance benefits of a 44% median reduction in page load time and a 39% reduction in data usage on the same sites. Moreover, a number of the Quantum components are written in Rust, a language specially designed to ensure that several major types of security vulnerabilities are protected against.
To reflect the overall improvements, Mozilla has also refreshed and redesigned the Firefox user interface through our Photon project to provide fast, fluid and smarter design flow. The new, minimalist design introduces square tabs, smooth animations, and a Library, which provides quick access to your saved items: bookmarks, Pocket List, history, downloads, tabs, and screenshots.
Firefox Rocket Exclusively for Indonesian Users
Internet use is growing faster in South-East Asia than any other region in the world and Indonesia is the 5th largest country worldwide in terms of number of Internet users*1. In addition, Indonesia is a mobile first country where nearly 70% of Indonesians access the Internet using their mobile devices, versus 28% for laptops and desktop*2. This makes Indonesia an important Internet market in the world.
From Internal user research conducted by Mozilla, we found around 40% of young Indonesian users are not satisfied with their default mobile browsers because of the slow speed. In light of this, Mozilla developed Firefox Rocket, the fast and lightweight Android browser customized for Indonesia.
The benefit of being fast and lightweight allows users to save data and phone storage. Also, you can capture, share content and browse quickly, even on slow connections. Firefox Rocket’s APK size is smaller than 2.39MB, which is the smallest amongst major browsers. This will give you the shortest app download time. Not only can you download Firefox Rocket very quickly, Firefox Rocket also allows you to launch apps in just about 1 second, giving you the fastest app launch speed among other major players.
Some of the key features of Firefox Rocket include Turbo Mode, Screenshot, Clear Cache, Storage Control, and Block Images. Users can browse faster with Turbo Mode which speeds up your browsing by blocking ads to save data. And if you want additional saving, you can easily Block Image loading and use the Screenshot feature to access your content offline. With Storage Control, you can save downloads to SD card and free up phone storage easily and use the Clear Cache feature to free up further phone storage. You can start getting to your content quicker.
Firefox Rocket is available now (in Indonesia only) with Firefox Quantum being released on Nov. 14th. Mozilla sincerely invites you to enjoy the magnitude of the changes we’ve made and experience Internet browsing like never before.
